Another notable peak, Siula (6,344 m) was made famous by mountaineer Joe Simpson in his book Touching the Void . Unlike the neighboring Cordillera Blanca , Waywash does not have wide valleys and the mountain passes are higher. There are many minor peaks surrounding the ice-covered and several passes that exceed 5,000 m (16,000 ft). It is necessary to travel a considerable distance from the central range to find terrain below 3,000 m, even on valley floors, and the range is often considered to include this much larger area. The vegetated areas of the cordillera are part of the humid puna ecoregion of the central Andes.
The area is sparsely populated, with hamlets being very small and generally only found below 4000 m (the snow line is at approximately 4800 m). The closest towns are Chiquián (3400 m) and Cajatambo (3375 m). Some mining activities are carried out in the area, so north of the mountains there is an unpaved road that goes up to 4,750m. In 2002, the Peruvian Ministry of Agriculture declared the Huayhuash mountain range a "reserved zone" and prohibited certain economic activities. The area is now a protected area, including any future mining. Consider it one of the most beautiful hikes in the world.
